Elder sibling of the flashier Neighbourhood and Victor’s (in Hale), Karina and James Hitchen’s barbecue joint conjures up Americana with neon, stars and stripes and pulled pork aplenty. The location, a unit in pristine Spinningfields, might seem an incongruous setting for the earthy specialities of Dixie, but the Southern Eleven culinary take is fairly restrained. Meat plates with fries, slaw and sauce might feature brisket, smoked sausage, short ribs or hickory-smoked belly ribs, while deep-fried pickles, popcorn chicken, street cart-style hot dogs and sloppy joes tick all the boxes for the stateside nostalgia-hunter. Pecan pie sundae and vanilla baked cheesecake with cherry pie topping are the pick of the puddings. The humour and conviction of Manchester’s leading dirty-food peddlers isn’t quite here, but the offer of everything from a burger-eating challenge to takeaway Cobb salad lunch boxes keeps the appeal broad. Drinks include the house Southern Eleven beer.
