Tattu is a modern Chinese restaurant with multiple sites across the UK, including London, Birmingham, Leeds and Edinburgh, with Manchester the home of its original site. Initially set up by two brothers back in 2015, the concept behind Tattu is to bring together exceptional cooking with beautiful and meaningful design.
Although the brand stipulates that ‘no Tattus are ever the same’, its unique interiors are instantly recognisable, with Tattu in Manchester displaying many of the same hallmarks as its sister restaurants. A moody colour scheme of charcoal greys and dark wood, combined with dim lighting, gives the space a seductive feel, while its signature purple blossom cherry tree stands proudly in the centre of the space.
Guests can choose between a la carte or tasting menus, with the latter featuring a curated selection of Tattu’s best and most popular dishes. Highlights include sticky beef short rib with soy, chilli and crispy shallots and sesame roasted scallops with Chinese sausage, crushed edamame and mint to start. Examples of larger dishes include Japanese black wagyu ribeye with green beans and truffle sesame soy, Shanghai black cod with hoisin, ginger and lime, and duck egg and sausage fried rice. Finish on a sweet note with a dessert called Cherry Blossom (yes, like the tree) which features white chocolate, cherry and candyfloss.
Don’t neglect the cocktail menu which is just as innovative as the food. Here, you’ll find Tattu Signatures such as Skull Candy with vodka, candy and lemon, as well as Tattu Favourites including the likes of Lucky Shui combining gin, Chinese vermouth and guava. An extensive, although rather pricey, wine list includes a range of familiar and more premium bottles, with tasting notes to help the reader make their choice. A selection of sakes, beers and spirits can also be found further down.
