Following the success of the long-running Mango Room on Kentish Town Road, restaurateur Derrick Blake has launched the Mango Shack – a new venture that brings an extra dose of Caribbean zest to the Camden scene. Natural wood features, archways covered in patchwork of designs and a massive 8ft fireplace create a vibrant backdrop for some full-on food pepped up with special hand-crafted sauces. Dishes such as mackerel with green banana, curried goat and char-grilled jerk chicken with rice and peas share the billing with roti wraps and a few Med-influenced staples (seafood spaghetti, mushroom-and-asparagus risotto, etc). Alternatively, pitch up at the bar for ‘lickle bites’ (aka Caribbean tapas) and rum punches, as ska and reggae classics blast out through the speakers. Mango Shack is also home to the Camden-based MintArts Gallery.
