SquareMeal Review of The Prince Albert Camden

You’ll find this cool-as-a-cucumber gastropub lurking in the Camden backwaters, making it an ideal refuge from the swathes of goths & teenyboppers traipsing around the market. Light pours in through huge windows in the bar area – a good job, as with all that russet wood it could look gloomy. Outside, there’s a little terrace for alfresco drinking. The kitchen takes its food seriously, but is just as happy turning out rump steak & chips, or fishfinger sandwiches smothered in tartare sauce. Grown-up flavours are apparent in monkfish with chickpea & chorizo stew, ham-hock terrine, & blood-orange & almond tart. The accessible wine list offers broad choice by the glass, & there’s a praiseworthy line-up of beers, ciders & ales: Black Sheep, Bombardier, Tuborg & Addlestones.

We had a lovely evening with my daughter who recently moved to the area. The staff were great from the moment we entered. We had hoped to sit down stairs but we were told that we needed to eat in the restaurant because it was a friday. No real drama and in the end it was nicer upstairs anyway! Menu was nice – nothing too fancy but nicer then your usual ‘pub-grub’ Food came quickly, was well presented and we all enjoyed our meals! We all have wine and coffee's and two courses and the bill wasn't a shocker – so over all we were thrilled! We look forward to visiting again next time we are in town.

I found the fish dry and the quantity insufficient. I asked the waitress for a Yorkshire pudding as a side dish – it didn't arrive until I asked twice. Her English was so poor that she assumed ‘Yorkshire pudding’ was a sweet. When it came, it was small, dry and flat. Then we waited over an hour for our sweets which we had ordered when we ordered our main courses. After I asked about them we waited another twenty minutes. Finally I said that if they didn't bring the sweets within ten minutes we would leave. Instead of the sweets they brought the bill! OK it was half price, but it did seem peculiar that they would rather lose money on their lunch than bring two sweets from the kitchen. I did not speak rudely or agressively in any way. We will not have Sunday lunch here again. There were a lot of customers but no shortage of staff. I found the meal and dismissive atmosphere inexcusable. I would never reccomend it after today. It is irrelevent to say that I have just come out of hospital and this was the first time I had left the house -it was meant to be a restful Sunday but it simply added to the stress of illness.
