Newly revamped after a fire caused its closure at the start of 2017, this popular pub-cum-fun palace is a flamboyant one-off that even includes a circus – jolly under a stripy big top. Fans of Cirque du Soleil-style entertainment, vaudeville and stand-up comedians are already celebrating The Aeronaut’s return. In the main bar, enjoy craft ales from Portobello Brewing and owners Laine’s whose in-house microbrewery has been replaced by a virtual-reality games room. Crowd-pleasing chow incorporates small plates of tempura prawns or mini chorizo pizzas, as well as keenly priced mains of aubergine parmigiana, jerk chicken with sweet potato chips, plus various burgers and salads; there’s also a kids’ menu. Riotous retro fun-fair decor includes some worryingly realistic new customers: life-sized and rather creepy clowns (coulrophobics beware!). Take shelter in funky fairground stalls that double as cabanas in a vast Astroturfed beer garden served by two bars.
