Given that it has links to various wholesale companies dealing in prime seafood and Japanese provisions, it’s no surprise that this dinky ‘sushi bar’ scores highly for the sheer freshness and quality of its raw materials (without any hike in prices). As an introduction, order one of the mixed sets – perhaps glossy slivers of tuna, salmon, yellowtail and mackerel neatly lined up on wooden boards with mounds of wasabi and pickled ginger. Raw fish aside, there’s also plenty to enjoy: octopus dumplings are change from the norm, crisp, grease-free tempura and tonkatsu specialities show off the deep-fryer’s art; tofu steaks are grilled with teriyaki sauce, and there are excellent yakitori skewers too. Also check out the selection of chirashi/donburi rice bowls loaded with all manner of toppings. Drink draught Asahi, shochu or warm saké, and be sure to reward the obliging, knowledgeable staff. Takeaways available.
