London weddings have always been cool, but in the last few years city brides (and grooms) have had an increasingly chic pick of unconventional venues across the capital. And, one type of venue that just screams laid-back city-dweller is a London pub, of which The George is the bees knees.
The George sits on Great Portland Street in the heart of buzzy Soho. It's been going as a public house since the 18th century, and over the last 200 years has acted as a meeting place for writers, artists and politicians of the time. Today, it's a stylish hang-out for locals and tourists alike, after having undergone a recent renovation which sees the original interiors given a plush re-vamp, particularly in the private dining areas.
The Dining Room is a gorgeous option for hosting a wedding breakfast, with a capacity of 40 people standing. Decor stays true to the building's history but with a glamorous flair; walls are hued a jewel-toned green and finished with high-shine lacquer, while chairs are reupholstered vintage designs. There's also the Private Dining Room with a capacity of 25 standing, or if you're looking for a really fun, eccentric space, try the Glue Pot Bar. An illuminated, statement bar, red colour scheme and turquoise bar stools give this space a quirky feel and would look great on pictures, though it has a smaller capacity of just 12 standing. If you're planning on having a bigger shindig, you can hire either the first floor, or the entire venue, with a capacity of 80 and 140 respectively.
In terms of catering, all food is provided in house and follows a set feast menu with an irreverent twist on traditional pub food. For example, at the moment, starter plates include a black pudding scotch egg with Oxford sauce, mains of Cumbrian sirloin steak with grilled portobello mushrooms, bonemarrow sauce and chunky chips. Finally, there's dessert of trifle - an English staple.
