Set in a prime location in London’s West End, just south of Buckingham Palace and St James’ Park, Victoria Station is widely considered to be the gateway into central London. Today, it’s a major London terminus. However, until the early 20th century, Victoria functioned as two separate stations: the London Brighton and South Coast Railway and the London Chatham and Dover Railway. The former rivalry is still visible in the architecture of the building, one features an elaborate Edwardian Baroque red brick facade, and the other is finished in more austere Portland stone. More recently, the station has been upgraded with new entrances and step-free access to alleviate overcrowding.
