Established in 1749, The Footman holds the distinction of being one of London's oldest pubs. Its storied history traces back to its original name, The Running Horse, a favoured haunt of the footmen who served the Mayfair households. These footmen would dash ahead of their master's carriages, ensuring a smooth passage by settling tolls in advance. As the era of using footmen dwindled out, one of their own took ownership of this pub, renaming it in his honour. The pub quickly earned a reputation as a hub of lively conversation and juicy gossip, solidifying its place in London's social fabric, where it still stands today.
Why not begin your time at The Footman with a signature cocktail? Choose from a Sipsmith Negroni, Woodford Old Fashioned, Patrón Paloma or classic Espresso Martini. Begin your meal with delicious starters, from confit duck and pistachio terrine, cherry chutney, warm smoked garlic sourdough, a haggis tart with baked swede and crispy lamb belly, or heritage beetroot served with goat's curd, endive and pickled pear.
From the grill, why not order a rosemary and garlic pork chop served with a pulled pork rosti, cider jus, chips and crackling or 35-day dry aged Scottish côte de boeuf to share, with watercress and a shallot and caper salad.
Don't forget about dessert! There are plenty of delicious options on the menu, each with a suggestion of a perfect pairing drink. Choose from a dark chocolate mousse with clementine and a cocoa nib crisp, a seasonal cheese board with spiced pear chutney, truffle honey and salted crackers, and a toffee apple crumble cheesecake served with blackberry sorbet. After dinner wines include a Domaine de l'Ancienne Cure Monbazillac and Château Filhot.
