The family behind the ever-popular Old Crown at Girton will be hoping their son can match its success at his new venture, The Wheatsheaf: an old pub in another small village just outside Cambridge. The high-ceilinged dining room with conservatory – tastefully refurbished in a palette of muted greys – has a light and airy feel. Booths and banquette seating around the sides keep the place cosy. The menu covers the usual gastropub repertoire, from chicken liver pâté and steaks to chorizo risotto and pork medallions. However, the team here make regular trips to London’s Billingsgate Market, so fish is a speciality: try the tiger prawns or the haddock and chips. The sign on the outside might say Greene King, but this pub isn’t tied – so expect better-quality food and a wider range of wines than usual.
