The refurbishment of this lovely village pub, only minutes from Cambridge, has retained the lovely old characteristics – wood beams, fire places and even a thatched cottage next door – but matched them with plenty of mod cons such as Nespresso machines and Wi-Fi in the comfortable bedrooms upstairs. The pub itself is combination of proper drinking den with a menu that demonstrates the ability and ambition of the kitchen. There are decent basics such as steaks and homemade sausages, but those wanting to push the envelope a little further are rewarded with pea, broad bean and mint risotto served with a crisp salad, or slow-roasted shoulder of lamb with braised lettuce and roast new potatoes. To drink, there’s local ale or decent wine, but the house punch is also worth a try.
