North Yorkshire is becoming increasingly well endowed with top-quality dining pubs & the Crown at Great Ouseburn is another desirable addition to the list. It’s a bit of a warren, but grab a seat anywhere – in the bar, snug, dining room or on the sunny little courtyard out back. Monthly changing menus are a genuine roll call of local & seasonal produce – in October, for example, agreeably executed & nicely presented dishes included Fountain’s Abbey Estate wood pigeon breast with bubble & squeak, along with baby beetroot & Lowna Dairy goats’ cheese parcels, Sutton on Forest roast suckling pig & a butternut squash, walnut & brie tart. To finish, impressive desserts such as figs in vanilla & cinnamon syrup might vie with apple & blackberry crumble made with fruit supplied by Wells Farm – just a few ‘food paces’ from the pub.
