Located on the Great Yorkshire Showground, Fodder is an enterprising, state-of-the-art showcase for regional food and drink, and makes a splendid spot for a light lunch or indulgent afternoon tea (try the giant meringues). Blond-wood floors and handcrafted furniture define the interior, or you can sit on the terrace overlooking the lovely Crimple valley. The menu takes its cue from the bountifully stocked shop: expect soup with seasonal vegetables, pasties, hot pork pies and warm salads, plus daily specials based on first-class Yorkshire meat (venison sausages or braised lamb shanks, say). As well as supporting local producers, Fodder claims to be Yorkshire’s greenest building with sheep’s wool insulation, solar panels, a sedum roof and lavatory doors made from recycled plastic bottles. If this is the future, it’s looking and tasting good.
