The obscure name is borrowed from a ditty by oddball 70s songster, Jake Thackray – although we’re not sure how that squares with a boozer (‘don't call me a gastropub') near City University. If it’s a shared sense of quaint post-war Britishness, pointed up with auction-room tables, festival bunting, vintage sideboards and posies of flowers in jam jars, then the owners have got it about right. A classic ‘tile and terracotta' backdrop keeps things nicely pubby, while the blackboard menu offers assorted hipster burgers (halloumi with kimchi, 12-hour pulled pork), trendy snacks (popcorn chicken with BBQ sauce) and grilled cheese sandwiches with various fillings. To drink, there are artisan British gins and real ales, with entertainment ranging from DJs and live bands to pub quizzes. The B&T is so pet-friendly, they even post pics of customers’ pooches on Instagram.
