Red’s True Barbecue started in Leeds in 2012 with a mission to spread the word about real, ‘low and slow’ barbecue cooking. Just a few short years later, this evangelical not-just-for-hipsters brand has gone nationwide and its ‘flock’ can’t seem to get enough of the pulled pork, burnt ends and the so-wrong-but-so-right doughnut burgers. Meanwhile, the faux-religious proselytising (‘let there be meat’) and rough-and-ready urban interiors (all brick, corrugated metal and neon) conceal some impressively earnest endeavour: Red’s is serious about real barbecue, and its owners go on annual trips to the States, returning with ever more original ideas for the menu. For a taste of pure Americana, order a root-beer float, pickleback or howdy-doody peanut and banana shake – otherwise explore the list of craft beers and cider.
