Celeb DJ Norman Cook is more ‘slim’ than ‘fatboy’, thanks to a love of sushi that prompted him to invest in his local Japanese restaurant. Relocated from Hove to a prime site in the centre of Brighton, Oki-Nami is fronted by co-owner/chef Mike Dodd – a Brit with over 15 years’ experience in the art of Japanese cuisine. Despite a few early teething problems, the place has settled down & is now thriving in its new home. Several visits are required to do justice to a huge menu that stretches from Japanese 'tapas' to sushi, sashimi & maki rolls, plus grills, noodles, soups & salads. Nice design touches (shell-shaped crockery & origami cranes) add interest to the otherwise Spartan blond-wood & white interior – although there’s a sexier vibe to the first-floor Oki-Bar, where saké cocktails are quaffed under neon lights overlooking the Pavilion Gardens.
