No one understands the meaning of Christmas better than The Alexandra pub in Wimbledon, which is offering a free Christmas dinner (and drinks!) to anyone who’s spending December 25 on their own this year. There’s no catch and no bookings involved. Simply show up between 12-3pm on Christmas Day and you’ll be treated to a slap-up roast dinner – drinks and all.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t live locally either. The only rule is you have to be on your own, with the pub explaining on Twitter: 'Christmas day is no fun sitting in the house on your own. Please come to us if you find yourself alone, we'll give you some FREE dinner & a FREE beer to wash it down'.

The Alexandra has been running its 'Don't be on your own on Christmas day' tradition since 2014, albeit with a hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic. Each year they team has invited guests down to the pub to enjoy a traditional roast with others around communal tables.

The Alexandra tweeted: 'Are we doing our FREE Christmas day dinner & booze thing for anyone who's otherwise on their own this year? Course we are. Don't be on your own on Christmas day, come to us instead. We'll give you FREE dinner & vino, I 100% promise you there's no catch. Just come?'.

So, how does it work? Guests who take up The Alex’s offer will be seated on tables of four, six or eight people where they’ll be served a three-course Christmas dinner along with wine. As much as it’s about the festive feast, the idea behind the tradition is to ensure no one has to spend Christmas alone. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to meet new people!
