About
Comprising an old wooden cruck barn with worn sofas and chairs, mismatched tables and wood floors, The Crooked Billet touts the kind of deliberately dishevelled look that suggests it hasn’t been through a makeover at all. Thanks to owners Young’s Brewery, the welcome is warm, service is friendly (if a bit “goofy”) and there’s a roaring fire in winter too. To eat, try one of the gargantuan, solidly rendered dishes from the main menu – perhaps calamari with garlic mayo, sausage and mash or pork belly with black pudding and lentils. Otherwise, order snacks at the bar (they even have doggie biscuits on offer for canine companions). Drinks are the usual Young’s offerings – decent bottled beers and cask sales, plus plenty of inexpensive wines over and above the rather lacklustre house plonk. Proper coffee too.
