If you're looking for a dining experience in the true sense of the word, let Colonel Saab Trafalgar Square transport you to another time and place entirely. The restaurant is founded by Roop Partap Choudhary who took inspiration from his parents, Colonel Manbeer and Mrs. Binny Choudhary, and their incredible adventures across the globe, for both the recipes, decor and ambience.
Having seen great success with his first venture in Covent Garden, Roop opened a second location in 2023 in a historic, multi-storey building boasting an opulent bar, lounge, dining area with glittering Firozabad chandeliers, mezzanine, and two private dining rooms. The space has to be seen to be believed, with luxurious, purple canopies flowing from the ceilings, coral-hued walls decorating in cultural artworks and a curated mix of treasures displayed as nods to the family's story.
Roop describes the restaurant as a contemporary viewpoint with an old soul, which very much applies to the menu, too. The food celebrates a range of cuisines across different regions of India and nods to contrasting styles of cooking, from street food favourites to dishes taken from royal kitchens. The range of menus is impressive and offers something for every occasion - from elaborate tasting menus and dainty afternoon tea, to pre theatre and a la carte.
If tasting menus are your thing, check out the six course offering which allows the diner to choose their favourites between the bigger dishes. For a preview of what to expect, the current menu begins with South Indian tomato and lentil rasam served with mini idli and puffed pastry bites, followed by Anglo Indian chicken chop served with salad and an Alphonso mango sorbet palette cleanser. For a slightly more casual affair, main dishes on the a la carte sound delicious, such as Colonel Saab's butter chicken in a rich, velvety tomato and cashew gravy.
