About

Afternoon tea at Café Royal is a regal experience in the heart of Regent Street. It's defined as an experience that is as decadent as the gilded golden salon that was once Oscar Wilde's favoured retreat. The menus here are crafted by executive pastry chef, Loic Carbonnet, and are full of absolutely delightful treats from start to finish. The afternoon teas are served in the golden salon that was once called the Grill Room, and in here, grandeur is never far away. You'll be surrounded by gold leaf designs, delicious food and artistic ceilings. Enjoy the free flowing Champagne and very best teas and soak in the atmosphere with a live pianist playing in the background.

First, you'll be served a selection of tea sandwiches, including the smoked Scottish salmon sandwich with dill infused cream cheese, marinated cucumber and white bread, along with the egg and truffle Clarence Court Brown eggs and Lincolnshire Poacher cheese with truffle on brioche bread. Curried chicken and roast beef are also on the menu. Of course, it's not an afternoon tea with plain and sultana scones, both served with strawberry preserve, Earl Grey tea jelly and Cornish clotted cream.

Your sweet treats include the royal cocoa chocolate financier with whipped ganache and salted caramel, along with the strawberry and coconut choux with poppy chantilly, and the lime and basil tartlet with meringue, the wild balinese vanilla and almond sponge, and a deliciously rich chocolate and hazelnut cake. There are also a range of vegetarian and vegan choices, along with a selection of teas and drinks. At select times, you can also enjoy delicious seasonal and collaborative afternoon teas, which are always worth taking a look at.

Pricey but so worth it
Champagne afternoon tea costs £55 at the Hotel Cafe Royal so isn't cheap and costs more when you compare it to the Ritz, the Wolseley and so on. However, I can confidently say that as a treat, it's worth it. You do get a lot more for your money than a lot of other afternoon tea offerings, including a savouries course, a palette refresher, biscuits, a sweets course and then the offer of slices of larger cakes on display. The savouries were all excellent - classics with slight twists such as cream cheese and cucumber with beetroot. The sweets were all excellent too. The Oscar Wilde Bar, where the tea is taken is absolutely stunning and the ambience, with a pianist, is sublime. Staff can't do enough either. A must do for afternoon tea lovers.

Everyone should visit this brilliantly refurbished room, at least once. Despite it's name it's a bar not a restaurant, merely a bar. The prices are steep (think Claridges or Connaught) ; £25 for a glass of their cheapest champagne (Tattinger). The room though is exquisite, quite the most beautiful bar in London. Unfortunately the room was mostly empty when I visited so it lacked atmosphere, but the service was good and the excellent background music helped. When word gets out it's going to be hard to get a table, so go soon.
