When it comes to seafood in London, the Michelin-starred Angler is at the top. Incidentally, it is also literally at the top - of the South Place Hotel. Spearheaded by executive chef Gary Foulkes who joined in 2016, this lofty space offers excellent views and cuisine to match. The west-facing terrace is the perfect place to soak up the afternoon sun over drinks, with heaters and a retractable roof allowing versatility in the face of British weather. Perhaps the best way to enjoy the food at Angler, however, is The Chef’s View - Angler’s semi-private dining room.
The restaurant can seat up to 84 guests for a meal or up to 200 standing guests for receptions. Those looking for a truly special meal can opt for the tasting menu, which kicks off with nibbles like a prawn and squid ink cracker with smoked cod’s roe and espelette pepper or crispy pig’s head with BBQ apple ketchup and cranberry. The tasting courses then travel through various seafood creations like sea bass tartare with oyster cream, green apple and shiso, hand-picked Devon crab with Hass and avocado, wasabi and finger lime and roast Newlyn cod with caramelised parsley root, line-caught squid and Alsace bacon.
Alternatively, the a la carte menu features more relaxed yet equally refined dishes, such as native lobster ravioli with Orkney scallop, clementine and basil to start, steamed wild turbot with Japanese mushrooms, squid ink noodles and bonito dashi, and sorbets such as rhubarb, pear and bergamot or blood orange to finish.
The wine list features bottles from all over the globe, with a large selection by the glass too. There is an impressive selection of vintage champagne, perfect for making your dinner extra special.
