Welwyn is a village in Hertfordshire that is sometimes known as Welwyn Village or Old Welwyn. There's a need to distinguish here, as the larger Welwyn Garden City sits about a mile south of Welwyn Village. If you are visiting Welwyn Garden City, you'll be in the birthplace of the delicious breakfast cereal, Shredded Wheat. This is one of England's first garden cities and one of its earliest new towns. Both parts of Welwyn have plenty of natural beauty to explore outdoors with great open spaces, along streets lined with neo-Georgian buildings and a mix of the old and new when it comes to shops, restaurants and pubs. The Grade I listed Hatfield House is just 15 minutes away from Welwyn and has centuries of history within its walls. It’s a leading example of Jacobean architecture and was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, the first Earl of Salisbury.
