Suite spot: The Curtain Hotel, Shoreditch
NY hotelier Michael Achenbaum’s first European property brings with it a members club, a big-name restaurant and a rooftop pool. But it’s the slick Shoreditch suites we’re really interested in

The Curtain suite hotel Shoreditch

We stayed

In one of the Shoreditch Suites on the third floor. With muted hues of charcoal and forest green, masculine furnishings and an unapologetically nightclub vibe, it’s not unlike stepping into a Tom Ford film.

A post-industrial, shabby-chic backdrop of exposed brickwork and hardwood floors is enlivened with textured wallpapers, a metallic fabric sofa and a roll-top bath at the bottom of the bed. To miss mentioning the steam room-cum-shower would be remiss too.

This is Shoreditch wearing its Sunday best, making it particularly appropriate for cool business travellers. The small lounge area makes small but stylish business meetings a reality too. Staying in a suite also grants access to the hotel’s coveted private members club areas.

We ate

At Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster. A much-hyped sister property to Samuelsson’s wildly popular Harlem-based live-music eatery, Samuelsson’s menu rotates around Southern soul food with satellite international flourishes.

Expect meatballs with bone marrow dumplings and lingonberry sauce, chicken ’n’ waffles and sharing platters of Obama short ribs (yes, the former president is a fan). If you’re pairing up try the Bird Royale Feast (an entire fried chicken melodramatically delivered to your table topped with a sparkler).

Next to the main restaurant is a secluded private dining room seating up to 18 – picture exposed brickwork, monochrome prints and statement halo lighting. Bespoke menus are available.

We liked

Breakfast on the rooftop at the all-day brasserie LIDO. We were also rather taken with the live blues being performed in Red Rooster. There’s a band on five nights a week and a live gospel choir soundtracking the boozy Sunday brunch.

The hotel’s dedication to good music is echoed throughout the building and in the suite itself, with Mick Rock’s photographic prints of music icons and hip flourishes like a vintage-looking Marshall bluetooth speaker on the bedside table. Cult cocktail makers Trash Tiki nailed our margaritas ahead of dinner too. Find them in Tienda Roosteria on the ground floor.
