In summer 2024, {10-11} Carlton House Terrace unveiled an extensive redevelopment of the space, one that transformed this historic building into one of London’s most flexible, future-forward events venues. This £9.6 million redesign - supported by £5 million from the Wolfson Foundation - constitutes the most significant alteration of the famous Georgian townhouse in its 120-year history.
As specialists in sustainable, eco-conscious design, renowned architects Wright & Wright took the lead on the project, bringing this historic Grade I listed landmark into the modern age. Aside from a general opening-up for the lower ground floor, that modernisation also includes notable milestones - {10-11} Carlton House Terrace is one of the first Grade I listed building to be granted permission to install double glazed windows, for example, and the heating system is now entirely carbon-free thanks to air source heat pumps. These changes are just some of the innovative, low-energy solutions that have been installed throughout the building, all of which have dramatically reduced the building’s carbon footprint.
Lower Ground Floor
{10-11} Carlton House Terrace’s basement level - previously a warren of smaller rooms - has been transformed into three stunning double-height event spaces, all bathed in natural light via lightwells that wrap around the building, and equipped with state-of-the-art technical facilities. These are all served by a completely reimagined central stairway and lift system, which makes the entire lower ground floor wheelchair accessible.
The SHAPE Room (left) and The Lecture Room (right)
The largest of those is The SHAPE Room - a flexible, contemporary space designed to handle a range of technology-forward events from lectures and seminars to conferences and more. It operates as Carlton House Terrace’s largest conferencing space, with capacity for 125 guests, as well as top-class streaming facilities, triple laser projection and HD cameras for hybrid conferencing. A cutting edge high curved screen acts as the focal point of the room, and SHAPE also has a green room to the side where conference speakers can relax. Meanwhile, a dedicated technician is available at all times to make sure even the most technology-dependent events go without a hitch.
On the other side of the building, The Lecture Room is another ultra-modern conference and flexible event space, complete with an LED display wall, lectern, and the same top-of-the-line hybrid conferencing technology as you’ll find in The SHAPE Room. Like the other rooms, The Lecture Room is pillar-free, making it flexible enough to use as an exhibition space, for product launches, networking events and more.
The Wohl Gallery adjoins The SHAPE Room and The Lecture Room, and is similarly bright, airy and neutral in colour palette. This space is ideal as a meeting or networking space, and also acts as a breakout room for both the other spaces.

Ground Floor
On the ground floor, two of {10-11} Carlton House Terrace’s most historic rooms have been reimagined as part of the building’s transformation.
The Reading Room was once the dining room of former Prime Minister William Gladstone when he lived here, and he would sometimes host cabinet meetings here. The renovation has faithfully restored the beautiful period features of the room, whilst integrating a built-in screen and PA system, making this perfect for meetings, lectures and other small private and corporate events. Like the Lower Ground Floor spaces, The Reading Room is equipped with built-in screens, cameras and hybrid-ready technology.
Next door you have The Library, a slightly smaller but no less significant space which houses an extensive collection of humanities books, written by fellows of The British Academy. Plush carpets and warm timber bookcases make The Library a cosy space for more intimate gatherings, whether that’s board meetings, product launches or private dinners, though it does also have a suite of cutting-edge, hybrid-ready technology.

‘An exciting new chapter for {10-11} Carlton House Terrace.’
{10-11} Carlton House Terrace still boasts five remarkable first floor event spaces too, ranging from grand reception rooms like the Council and Radhakrishnan Rooms, to the stunning Barnard Room, with its guilt carvings and Trompe L’oeil painted ceiling.
Also noteworthy is The Beatrice Webb Room, Gallery and Music Room - an all-in-one private event space which can be set up for presentations, ceremonies, seminars, panel discussions and more. The Beatrice Webb Room itself boasts views over the Royal Park, The Mall and Westminster Abbey, whilst the adjoining Gallery can be used as a breakout space, catering area or a registration point as guests arrive via winding dual staircases.
With three floors of distinct event spaces and unrivalled historic significance, this remarkable transformation makes {10-11} Carlton House Terrace a unique proposition for private events in London.
‘This project marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for {10-11} Carlton House Terrace. The new design unlocks existing, underused spaces, transforming the historic building for the future and enabling us to serve growing audiences,’ says Catherine Owen, head of venue sales and marketing at {10-11} Carlton House Terrace.
‘The venue’s transformation will create flexible rooms for new ways of meeting and sharing in digital, hybrid and in-person formats. These tech enabled spaces will fit sympathetically alongside our stunning Georgian architecture, and we are excited to be able to offer both the old and the new to suit our clients.'
