One Aldwych

We stayed
In one of One Aldwych’s Studio Suites. They might not be the biggest the hotel has to offer but they’ve certainly got the most impressive views. Located on the apex of the triangular property, the floor-to-ceiling lounge windows face Waterloo Bridge, and all that the South Bank has to offer.

When we stayed, we were in prime position to overlook Ride London’s annual cycle race through the capital – we could see bicycles stretching all the way down the Strand while we sipped from the offerings of the Nespresso machine. Watching those beneath us indulge in exercise made us keen to have a quick blast in the suite’s own mini-gym before breakfast.

Decor throughout mirrors that of the rest of the hotel – picture tasteful, muted tones and smatterings of the hotel’s 400-strong collection of contemporary art on the walls. Fresh flowers – smaller arrangements of in-house florist Mark Siredzuk’s striking displays in the lobby – were a nice touch. A four-seat dining table makes board meetings and private dinners an option.

We ate
At the hotel’s newest development, Eneko at One Aldwych. Launched by three-Michelin-starred chef Eneko Atxa in late-2016, the modern Basque restaurant has much to offer groups – exclusive use sees 110 guests seated for dinner and 150 for drinks beneath its double-height ceiling.

We opted for the prettily presented set dinner (£75pp) which includes crispy corn talo, heritage tomatoes and basil emulsion (pictured); followed by tempura hake with Basque-style red peppers; then peanut sponge cake with dark-chocolate ice cream. The breakfast offering, taken in Indigo, is not to be missed either. The scrambled eggs we sampled were cooked to perfection.

We liked
The contemporary health club – and the fact that it’s got a 59m chlorine-free swimming pool, complete with underwater music. Before leaving the hotel, we opted for a dip, followed by the hotel’s signature Glow on the Go facial (£75 for 45 minutes) and felt fresh all day. Business travellers will be pleased to know that the spa also offers a Jet Lag Cure massage and facial. And relax.

We heard
That the hotel will be launching a festive season of its Fizz & Film with Curzon nights in its 30-seat cinema. Running on various dates from 24 November-24 December, the line-up includes Love Actually, Elf, White Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. For £55pp, the package includes a three-course dinner in Indigo, a glass of champagne and a ticket for the film.

Prices for a Studio Suite at One Aldwych start at £558 per night.
