Six impressive lithographs of the famous ‘terracotta warriors of Xian’ look down from the walls of this “outstanding” local Chinese – a slightly cramped but atmospheric modern room with banquette seating, bamboo matting on the walls and a brigade of smart, smiling staff. Expect “great service and lovely food” from a diverse menu that aims to please allcomers with its well-rendered, flavoursome dishes. All the usual generic suspects are here in the shape of sesame prawn toasts, hot-and-sour soup, beef with black bean sauce and quick-fried squid with chilli, but also look for the line-up of sizzling platters, spicy lamb cutlets with black peppercorns and ‘five willow’ fish (deep-fried fillets in a sweet-and-sour pickled dressing). Various noodle, rice and vegetables riffs also make an appearance, while desserts are of the toffee apple/red bean cake variety. Regulars, it seems, are “never disappointed”.
