Wygston's House is the oldest house in the city, and has remained on High Street since the medieval era. This very building has witnessed the history of the busiest part of town, and the timber frame dates back to the 15th century. It is thought that Roger Wygston, who was the mayor of Leicester and MP in 1472, and a leading wool merchant, lived here. The building was owned by the City Council for many years, and after its restoration in 1974 it housed a Museum of Costumes, before being closed for 16 years, and then reopening in 2017 as a restaurant.
Enjoy a selection of small plates with the rest of your table, or as a starter to your main. You will get to enjoy halloumi fries with chilli jam, tempura prawns with a sweet chilli sauce, or BBQ cauliflower wings with a vegan garlic mayo and BBQ sauce. Light bites are a great shout, too, and include a soup of the day made with the freshest seasonal produce, or mussels cooked in a white wine reduction and served with freshly baked bread. For your main, why not enjoy the spaghetti with Mediterranean vegetables in a pomodoro sauce, with vegan parmesan and rocket, or the lamb shank with garlic new potatoes, baby carrots, wilted spinach and a red wine jus. Other options include the pea risotto, falafel salad and moules frites, along with the rack of BBQ pork ribs that are slow cooked to fall off the bone, and served with chips, onion rings and a side salad.
If burgers are your thing, enjoy the classic beef seasoned patties with crispy bacon, emmental cheese and a house burger sauce. There are other options of spicy bean, pulled pork, chicken and cheese, and a vegetable burger. Sandwiches are great for lunch, and include a light option of salmon and cream cheese with rocket. If you want something super tasty, enjoy the loaded fries with beef and peppercorn sauce, or BBQ pulled pork.
