An Italian wine bar tucked under the arches on Brazennose Street, Veeno specialises in Sicilian wines produced by Caruso & Minini, from the family vineyards of owner Nino Caruso. The choice of 20 bottles is offered alongside traditional spuntini (appetisers) such as stuffed flatbreads, caponata, arancini and a mouth-watering selection of cheeses and cured meats – from sweet, golden pecorino gran riserva to earthy truffled mortadella. You can also set up a simple tasting of six wines with food to match, while Italian beers, cocktails, liqueurs and Proseccos provide additional liquid back-up. The room is white-painted and plain, but the concept has obvious appeal; thanks to successful crowdfunding, there are now Veenos in Leeds and York and the aim is to grow further. On Wednesdays between 5pm and 8pm, you can pay £7 for a drink and unlimited cruising of the apericena buffet, which features bruschetta, salami and simple pasta dishes.
