SquareMeal Review of The Waterside

The guys at Young’s Brewery have done well to inject some character into this Imperial Wharf site, which now combines a swish bar with a smart mezzanine dining area. Floor-to-ceiling curtains & different levels break up the high-ceilinged space, & the waterfront terrace – with its own bar in summer – is a sought-after spot in hot weather. The menu mixes standards such as braised lamb shank or sausage & mash with a few brighter ideas including potted venison with pickled gherkins, although desserts stay firmly on safe ground with the likes of sticky toffee pudding or apricot crumble. The wine list offers a touch more excitement, with much of the global list available by the glass; meanwhile, the downstairs section of the pub also doubles as a deli/café during the day.

An unpleasant experience.....

I witnessed incredible rudeness towards customers when visiting with friends.

I have been visiting this pub regularly over the last 6 months and dropped in to the Waterside after the refurbishment of this pub which has an amazing location.
However I was saddened to witness appalling rudeness by the manager towards customers who was grabbing their unfinished drinks and taking them away while loudly telling them to leave as the pub was ‘now closed’.
When one customer politely complained that their unfinished drinks had been taken away the manager rudely said “go and get your coffee somewhere else then next time”.

I do hope that this type of obnoxious behaviour will not be tolerated by the owners, a large pub chain. My friends from overseas were astounded to witness such rudeness to customers!

I rarely write negative comments about a restaurant but am compelled to write this in the hope that the owner will act constructively to rectify the appalling attitude of the manager.

The re-design has made the bar ordinary

Such a shame about the resdesign as it’s just now like every other bar. Yes, it’s opened it up but at the expense of making the layout of the bar less interesting. As a local - I used to like to come in to find a corner to myself or sofas outside on the less sunny side. Now it’s just a vacuum. Why it was considered a priority to redesign something that didn’t need a new look in the first place is beyond me. They could have used the money for bringing live music or jam sessions back. You fall upon the bar as soon as you walk in - makes the place seem less grandeur.
