The owner of this cosy local pub more or less bought it on the spot when she saw it on a visit from Hertfordshire 20 years ago. As far as impulse purchases go, The Ship Inn has worked out well for her: by day, locals and beachwalkers tuck into simple dishes (such as kipper pâté from nearby Seahouses, served with stottie cake) that make good use of Northumbrian ingredients, while at night there’s a short daily menu that often includes the likes of hand-picked crab with crusty bread and mayo, or Bamburgh rib-eye with onion marmalade, herbed potatoes and buttered veg. It helps, of course, that The Ship Inn is right on the beach, with stunning coastal views from both the low-ceilinged, stone-clad interiors and a breezy terrace. You can’t help but want to grab a pint with a sea view, or take a moonlit after-dinner stroll to add some romance to the equation.
