In the heart of historic Caernarfon, the Bench Bistro at the Old Courthouse is an elegant yet casual destination serving modern British cuisine in a relaxed setting. Located in what was once Caernarfon’s Magistrates court until 2009, this Grade I listed building boasts a charming atmosphere featuring ornate plasterwork, high ceilings, the original magistrate's bench and unbeatable views of Caernarfon Castle opposite. With such a rich history and unique ambience, this is a great destination for everything from a date night meal to a celebratory dinner.
Due to the focus on seasonality, local produce and high quality ingredients, the menu changes frequently. Expect dishes such as fennel and artichoke soup, pork belly with fermented cabbage and chipotle sauce, and smoked sea trout with toasted sourdough and sauce gribiche, all of which are starters on the autumn menu. Mains are hearty and traditional such as saddle of Welsh lamb with Anglesey carrots and hazelnut crust, grilled chicken breast with wild mushrooms and truffle jus, and fillet of sea bream with grilled asparagus, harissa yoghurt and salsa verde. Vegan options are also available. Classic desserts like crème brulee, chocolate brownie and lemon tart feature, or finish with a bang with affogato and half a shot of whisky or Amaretto.
On the drinks side of things, there is a modest and reasonably priced wine list, a selection of classic cocktails like Negronis and Mojitos, and beers, as well as soft drinks and juice. Be sure to keep an eye out for regular events held at The Old Courthouse like live music evenings held in the main room, the perfect accompaniment to a romantic meal.
