We all fancy some easy-going comfort food from time to time, and when that particularly craving strikes, there's a seat in The Granary with your name on it. The Granary is a buzzy, neighbourhood all-day eatery near Queen Square in central Bristol, with a great vibe and striking interiors.
Think unique, period windows flooding the space with light, and a colourful tiled bar to draw the eye and a mix of seating, from Scandi-style wooden bar stools at the counter to big leather armchairs for curling up in and having a good chat. It's the perfect space for an informal Sunday hang and usually packed with locals.
In terms of the menu, days kick off here with a hearty breakfast, starting with the likes of buckwheat waffles sprinkled with sugar and lemon juice, next to five grain and honey granola with gooseberry curd, shiso and hung yoghurt. Expect an upgrade on the classic English breakfast thanks to the Granary breakfast which is smoked bacon with “sosij”, a fried egg, mushrooms, black pudding fritter, fire braised tomatoes, smokey fava beans and flatbread, alongside a selection of creative modern plates.
Moving onto the all day menu and there's something for everyone. Fancy just a bite? Then you have to try the sourdough flatbreads made from a bespoke blend of Shipton Mill flours and cooked at 400 degrees. These come laden with all sorts of fresh, seasonal ingredients from Bath blue cheese with bitter leaves, pear and walnuts to oyster mushrooms and white truffle oil.
If you're in the mood to share, order a few of the small plates for the table. We like the sound of the chopped spinach salad with macerated kale, tamari seed dressing and raw mushroom, alongside cider brined boneless fried Chicken with brown sugar and buffalo sauce.
The indulgent grill section is certainly worth your attention, too, with a variety of dishes cooked over fire. How about the dayboat fish grilled in kale leaves? Or perhaps the slow roasted Story Farms lamb shoulder? We'd give either a try.
