Well worth seeking out if you are staying at the nearby Sea Garden Cottages or other addresses around inviting flower-strewn Tresco, The Flying Boat Club pays homage to the Royal Air Station that was based on the island during WWII – note the splendid titular painting on the wall and the old rails outside on which the flying boats were wheeled down to the sea. During the day, the venue runs as café offering drinks, snacks and light lunches, but two evenings a week it also does duty as a family-friendly bistro. Local fish features heavily on the short menu (think pan-fried sea bass fillet or whole roasted sea bream infused with fennel), but the choice also extends to char-grilled Cornish steaks and veggie items such as butternut squash, red onion and wild mushroom tart. There’s a noteworthy wine list too.
