Nestled in the Yorkshire Peak District, this historic stone-built inn looks North Country to the core, so it’s surprising to find a taste of France on the menu. Starters are billed as entrées (think French onion soup, salade périgourdine or warm goats’ cheese with honey and walnut salad) while main courses (‘plats principaux’) could be herb-crusted rack of lamb on ratatouille with roasted potatoes, cassoulet toulousaine or chicken chasseur with rösti. Fish and veggie specials are always available, while desserts are (not surprisingly) in the classic French mould. Broadening the geographical scope even further, there’s a full menu of artisan wood-fired pizzas and the owners even put on occasional Thai banquets, while burgers, sandwiches, croques monsieur and ‘pub grub’ classics keep the drinkers stoked up as they sup well-kept pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord, York Guzzler or Saltaire Blonde in the traditional bar.
