If Simon Cowell did bars, might Soda Room be his template? A flash cocktail den/ housey nightclub hybrid located beneath The Botanist on Broadgate Circle, this Prohibition-era number is as slickly choreographed as the TV mogul's flagship talent show. Ambitious pricing aside, there's little to criticise on a drinks list that touts prosaic but plausible ideas such as Tanqueray London Sour, Kiwi Bellini (with Ketel One vodka) or Black Eye (Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey, cassis, Drambuie 'blaberries’, ‘raspbeerries' and mint), plus spirits from £180 a bottle, big-name Champagnes and beers from Tom and Ed Martin’s Long Arm Brewery. If you’re in the mood for nibbling, consider shrimp and bacon croquettes, smoked pork kebabs with sticky peanut, 'train wreck tacos' or spicy hummus with flatbread. While Soda Room self-evidently has its fans, we feel that this sheeny late lounge somehow lacks the X-Factor.
