From humble beginnings in Ealing, award-winning Santa Maria has opened a smart second establishment producing mouth-watering pizzas to tempt south-west Londoners. The light, airy pizzeria sits on a corner of the busy King’s Road and features a wall mural of the eponymous saint proudly looking over diners. We began with starters of flavoursome meatballs mixed with smoked mozzarella, served with ricotta in a rich and tangy tomato sauce; and creamy smoked burrata Pugliese with crunchy bread sticks (a revelation). Beautifully light pizzas from the roaring oven are rightly the star attraction. A San Giuseppe – spicy Yorkshire sausage sitting splendidly among smoked mozzarella and wild broccoli – delivered great rustic flavours; and Santa Rosa came with a delicate tomato-based sauce, smoked mozzarella, salami and smoked aubergines. The only let-down was an overdressed side salad of soggy leaves and tomato. Puds include a satisfying combination of tiramisu, banana and Nutella, while drinks range from carefully selected Italian wines and beers to adventurous cocktails.
