SquareMeal Review of Namaasté Kitchen

Silver Award

Grilling is the name of the game here and all the fiery action is on show as chefs skilfully handle the tandoor, sigri and tawa before your eyes. But that’s not to say this is a rough-and-ready sort of place, not a bit of it. Namaasté Kitchen has creamy leather banquettes, designer light fittings, and even a couple of chef’s tables – in other words, it’s a pin-sharp modern Indian restaurant. The menu reaches well beyond the curry-house favourites, with chukandari venison cooked in the tandoor (flavoured with beetroot and fennel), followed by Goan sea bass served with dhokla, or a Dorset crab vindaloo. Spicing is well judged throughout and everything looks rather splendid on the plate. To finish, mango brûlée is a contemporary fusion that wins the day. The wine list has a decent global spread, including options under £20.

Disappointing
As good quality Indian food is pretty much our favourite option, we were really looking forward to trying Namaaste Kitchen. Unfortunately much of the meal didn't really deliver on flavour. To start we had soft shell crab and lamb samosas. The crab itself was fine but the batter was thick and tasteless - there was no discernable spicing, let alone seasoning. As for the samosas, they also suffered from stodgy, tasteless pastry and the lamb filling was also bland. Things picked up when it came to main course side dishes - date and giner naan, zaffrani pulao rice, sesame baby aubergine, okra, and pomegranate raita were all good. But the main dishes themselves were a bit disappointing. We like pretty hot food but the chilli hit in the tilapia fish curry was overwhelming. Our other main was oxtail rogan josh - the flavouring here was good and the meat was tender, unfortunately there wasn't much meat to be had as I suspect it was the thin end of the oxtail. Hoping we just caught the kitchen on an off night - based on our experience I am surprised this restaurant is listed in the 'best in north london' category in general and we've certainly had better Indian meals elsewhere.

This boutique restaurant in Camden Town is a great venue. The decor very modern and stylish with chefs table to view your delicious food being grilled. The food is amazing, I loved the Chargrilled Jingha and their famous Peshawari Lamb chops. Service is fantastic friendly but professional and discret. Highly recommended.
