Some fans visit Mantanah three times a week, so the Thai owners are clearly doing something right. The restaurant is set on a rather dismal road near a busy intersection, hence it’s a relief to be warmly welcomed into the small, sparingly decorated dining room by a traditionally attired waitress. The extensive menu includes the usual fried starters, curries & noodle dishes supplemented by more exotic regional specialities (the chef is from the north-east). Among these, shredded chicken & banana blossom stands out. Country curry is a favourite of the chef’s, & seafood dishes receive praise from diners. The intriguingly named ‘Lady Two Heart’ is deep-fried tilapia fillet served with two sauces: one spicy chilli, one garlic. Very few dishes top £8, & there’s plenty to tempt vegetarians.
