“I discovered my passion for cooking at the age of 12 when I was placed at Alpha Boys School, an Orphanage operated by the Sisters of Mercy in Kingston, Jamaica,” says Raymond. The owner of RapChar, Raymond began cooking for various events during his early days as a chef, and then 21 years later, he successfully fulfilled his dream and opened his first restaurant in 2023. If you’re looking for somewhere delicious to eat in Brixton, that has great vibes, try RapChar’s Caribbean grill.
To begin your meal, try the buttered pepper king prawns, native king scallops with barbecued cauliflower puree, or ackee and plantain croquettes. Whatever you choose, your starter will whet your appetite for your main beautifully. Main dishes begin with the Caribbean classics, which are served with a choice of charcoal mashed potato, fat chips, tossed rice and gungo peas, or coconut ginger jasmine rice with salad and coleslaw. The traditional mains include rap boneless curried goat, braised ox and jerk roast baby chicken.
There are also a range of delicious sounding fish, meat and vegetarian dishes, including the rags to riches old Jamaican classic which is known as tun cornmeal, with a modern day twist. This classic is a dish of pan fried halibut sitting on a bed of polenta, topped with cavolo nero and a drizzling of a light coconut curry rundown sauce.
When you're finished, enjoy the RapChar royal double chocolate mousse cake, a delicious bourbon apple crumble, or selection of sorbets and ice creams – such as mango, passion fruit, vanilla, rum and raisin and Champagne. Whatever you choose at RapChar, we know that you’ll enjoy your authentic Caribbean experience, with a twist.
