Kayal is a space where you can enjoy authentic Keralan seafood, with unique flavours that you can't find just anywhere else. This family-run restaurant is passionate about setting itself apart from the ordinary, with plenty of health-conscious dishes to enjoy.
Before dipping into the main menu, order the selection of pre meal snacks and pickles, which are authentic Kerala 'chayakkada special high tea snacks that are freshly made and served during the day, including homemade chutneys, lemon pickle and mango pickles. Warm yourself up with a muringakka soup that is well known for its medicinal quality, prepared with drumsticks, potato flavoured with shallots, garlic, ginger and curry leaves.
Pineapple boli is a popular starter, made from freshly sliced pineapple dipped in rice flour batter with black sesame seeds and crispy fried, served with chutney, along with tasty chicken puffs from the village bakeries. Dosas are made from a mixture of soaked lentils and rice, and all those on the Kayal menu are served with sambar and coconut chutneys. Choose from the nair masala dosa with tangy red chutney and melted butter, and the paper masala with a filling of seasoned potatoes, onions and peas.
Try the seafood chakara, which is a dish famous for including all of the best bits from the Kerala fisherman's net. Your plate will include traditionally marinated grilled king prawns, crab, king fish steak, fish cakes, salmon shashlik with capsicum, pineapple, grilled tomatoes, asparagus and a scoop of lemon rice topped with the chef's special sauce. Now that sounds like a treat! Another popular dish is the kozhi kurumulagu, which is one of the most famous dishes in the Travancore area of Kerala. This tasty feast is made with boneless chicken that's cooked in a black pepper based sauce with onion, ginger, garlic and turmeric.
