Never has a hotel or its restaurant been more inappropriately named than Hell Bay. This property, located on the remote island of Bryher in the Isles of Scilly, is, in fact, a beautiful & restful haven, & the restaurant boasts both exquisite views & some highly competent modern European cuisine based on local ingredients. At lunch, the likes of chargrilled Bryher crab claws, tiger prawns & scallops with sweet chilli oil pack a flavoursome punch, while at dinner innovative presentations of fish take centre stage: John Dory with saffron new potatoes, spring onion, mussels, carrot ribbons & fish cream, say. Desserts are thoughtful & well executed, too, as in local strawberry iced parfait topped with Italian meringues, while service is consistently smiling. The bedrooms have just been extensively refurbished in relaxed Californian style, so a stay-over is highly recommended.
