Nestling between Oxted, Hurst Green and Tandridge, this remodelled Victorian pub seems to please allcomers: there’s a great outdoor space, a huge bar, lots of little nooks, a lovely area around the fireplace and bags of space if you want to play pub games with friends and family. The atmosphere’s “excellent” and readers are also quick to applaud the eclectic gastropub food, which covers everything from charcuterie boards to massaman beef curry. Starters and ‘light bites’ could include sticky chipotle chicken wings as well as broccoli and sweet potato pakoras, while mains might feature pan-roast salmon with a spicy Cuban-style salad or crispy pork belly and braised pig’s cheek with ginger-beer glaze, apple purée and sauerkraut – as well the usual steaks, burgers and pies. Sandwiches, kids’ dishes and puds such as hot waffles or triple chocolate brownie complete the offer. Drinkers are well-served with a sizeable contingent of real ales from the Westerham Brewery and others in the south-east, and there are plenty of decent-value wines too.
