Fat Hippo are known to serve some of the best burgers in Newcastle, all prepared and dished out in a cosy little end terrace building in Jesmond. If you're travelling to Fat Hippo from Newcastle city centre, it's just a little outside, and a short walk from West Jesmond Metro station. These days, you may see Fat Hippo restaurants dotted around the country, but this branch is the OG, being the very place that the brand was created back in 2010.
You can start your meal with some frickles (fried pickles with Fat Hippo sauce), dirty waffle fries topped with bacon bits, trash browns with liquid cheese and cajun onion strings, cheese balls, buffalo wings, and waffle fry nachos. It would be impossible to say no to those, wouldn’t it? When it comes to burgers, all are served in a toasted demi brioche, and each come with a free side of hand cut chips, fries, tater tots or purple slaw. The wild Bill is a double patty with American cheese, smoked bacon, cajun tater tots, BBQ sauce, ranch and jalapenos. For something a bit different, try the PB+JJ, with chunky peanut butter, bacon jam and smoked chilli jello.
If you're more of a chicken fan, try the semi-parmed life with buttermilk chicken, American cheese, cheesy garlic bacon crumb, lettuce, pickles and garlic butter mayo, or the great white buffalo with hot honey buffalo sauce.
Vegans are well catered for, don't worry about that. There is the Harlem fake with southern fried plant based chkn, vegan cheese, pink onions, sriracha mayo, lettuce and purple slaw. The notorious VFC 2.0 comes with cajun tater tots, BBQ sauce and zinger mayo.
