Duke Bombay Café is a popular Indian restaurant in Darlington serving dishes that are inspired by the original cafes of Bombay. It’s owned by brothers Syed and Shumed Ahmed, who originally opened the restaurant on Duke Street and have since had to relocate to this larger site in Skinnergate, due to growing demand (and not enough seats!) for their authentic street food. The restaurant is comprised of two parts – a more casual area and a fine dining section – in order to provide a welcoming space suited to all types of occasions.
All its recipes are created in-house by a dedicated team of chefs, where it offers a unique menu of both classic and contemporary dishes. Syed and Shumed wanted to open somewhere for people to relax or enjoy a night out, while still adding a fine dining element to its food. The menu features an extensive range of starters and small plates, grills, chef specials, curries, biryanis as well as a vegan offering. Starters include familiar favourites, like onion bhajis, samosas and a shish kebab, while a host of authentic dishes such as Bombay savoury crepes stuffed with mushrooms, cheese and chicken tikka bring something new to the table. Meanwhile, a series of chef specials feature creations such as king prawns cooked with garlic, celery spring onion and mango pulp, Lamb Hatkora which sees lamb cooked with garlic, shallots, peppers and Bangladeshi lemon, plus Murgi Uri Jhaal, which is chicken breast cooked in a tandoor with a hot sauce and mangetout.
A list of refreshing drinks includes beer and cider, lassis and coolers as well as a selection of chai drinks. Duke Bombay Café is available to eat in or takeaway, with delivery options available via their website and Just Eat.
