Handily placed adjacent to the Theatre Royal (just a stone’s throw from Sauchiehall Street), this sophisticated, contemporary restaurant attracts a mix of locals, tourists and show-goers with its eclectic Chinese cooking – and the food is top-drawer stuff. Expect the unexpected here: tiger prawns are simmered in Champagne sauce and topped with strawberries; roast duck appears on a bed of cabbage and onion stir-fried in jasmine ‘hai seen’; buttery spring greens are wrapped in crispy fried pastry. The short, imaginative menu also finds room for tempura vegetables, Thai crab cakes, Malaysian curries and a few other pan-Asian classics. Unusually for a provincial Chinese restaurant, Dragon-i makes an effort with desserts: try lychee crème brûlée or koko sang gor – a chocolate fondue with fresh fruit. Good-value lunch and pre-theatre deals are also worth noting.
