Bury St Edmunds is known to locals as just Bury. And, Bury is a historic market and cathedral town in West Suffolk. With plenty of history to its name, the town is perhaps best known for Bury St Edmunds Abbey and St Edmundsbury Cathedral – you can still visit the ruins of the Abbey in the beautiful Abbey Gardens. At one time, many hundreds of years ago, the Abbey was one of the richest and largest in England and people came from all over the world to visit the Shrine of St Edmund, who was the first patron saint of England. The town has been featured in many films and television programmes such as David Copperfield and the Pickwick Papers, and many celebrities have been known to live here, including apparently Channing Tatum and Claudia Schiffer. Whilst this market town is found inland, 50 miles or so away from the coast, locals will set up their own sandy beach every year at the Whitsun Fayre.
