SquareMeal Review of All Star Lanes Bayswater

The most fun you can have in a pair of borrowed shoes, All Star Lanes offers an ace package of bowling, burgers, booze and bacon popcorn. Its stylishly got-up branches aim to please both occasional bowlers and regular Big Lebowskis. Unsurprisingly, menus look to America for inspiration, with ideas drawn from both the classic diner and its modern-day equivalent: consider buttermilk-fried chicken and jerk gravy, BBQ glazed baby back ribs or a nacho cheeseburger with taco shards. For the luxe experience, make it whole lobster and fries or truffled mac ‘n’ cheese. Drinking has been known to improve one’s game, so choose your poison from the likes of Brooklyn lager, hardshakes, Margaritas and picklebacks. Some lanes go to ‘walk-ins’, others can be reserved. It’s worth booking ahead and keeping an eye out for special offers and off-peak prices.

Not even one star
Just a bunch of rude and incompetent people. Customer service below zero! Stay away if you want your children not to be disappointed. Will never visit again!!!

Very good and fun
A really interesting set up. Nestled – without connection – underneath Le Café Anglais (is it 3 stories down?) the Bayswater (and original) branch of the bowling chain is a great place to go with friends and well known clients alike. The food, if you are that way inclined is amongst the best outright north american “diner” food in London. Think Henry J Beans come of age, or the late great Windy City… The bowling itself, once you have gotten used to the way to book the lanes is great fun and helps digest the calorific food. Cocktails and beers come by the pitcher too, but there is an overall slickness to the operation which keeps it this side of tacky most of the time. The private room and lane are worth consideration for bigger, private parties too!

Let's face it, you don't come to this place to eat (whether lunch or dinner) but because you want a drink and some food either before or after bowling. That's not to say the food is bad – its actually good honest comfort food with burgers, ribs, steaks etc all done to a god standard. Service can be on the slow side. Besides a nice way for an evening out with friends this is also a very good family place and fun for kids. Fairly good value for money as well

Good venue for a night out with a difference. I actually hired the 2 lane room for my 30th a few years ago & it was very good (food, drinks, service). Went back this saturday night with my husband for a quick bite & bowl & was quite impressed with the food in the diner, as it could have been poor in a gimmicky place like this. Quesadillas to start were ok and a salad as a main, which was really nice. Husband had deep fried squid & ribs, which he really enjoyed. Its a good place for a hen night/leaving-do.

I was very impressed by All Star Lanes on my first visit, and have since been back a few times and not been disappointed. The space itself is nicely laid out, with a bar just to the left of reception as you come in (decked out like some kind of 70s lumberjack joint), then the diner space between it and the lanes at the back. The menu ticks all of the typical diner-style boxes, and the food is surpisingly good – both the healthy (caesar salad) and not so healthy (burgers, fries) options. They also have a “blue plate special” each day and a range of interesting US beers, which adds to the authenticity of the experience, all served by pleasant (and patient) waiting staff. Of course, most of the fun is generated by the lanes themselves – the atmosphere from there certainly spills over into the dining area. Bowling is a great group activity (frankly, everyone tends to be as bad as each other), and its a great way to round off a night before finishing with a few drinks in the bar, where the cocktails are also good. Overall, highly recommended – just rememeber to book your lanes in advance. I'm eagerly awaiting the opening of the Brick Lane branch!
