Wirral Peninsula, known to locals as The Wirral, is a borough of Merseyside, not too far from Liverpool. Although The Wirral is only just over 60 square miles in size, it has got a great deal packed within its boundaries. The Wirral is home to 1900 listed buildings, 215 churches, 10 lighthouses, two watermills, a fort, a castle, five nature reserves, and 50 towns and villages. Is that not quite impressive? We think so. The name The Wirral derives from the meaning of myrtle corner, as once, this land was just heavily overgrown with bog myrtle. Perhaps you’ll find yourself here for just a day if you’re staying in nearby Liverpool, or maybe you prefer things to be a bit quieter. Whatever the case, you’ll find plenty to do in The Wirral, including a visit to the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Birkenhead Priory, or the Eureka! Science + Discovery museum.
