Sale e Pepe’s reputation proceeds it as a west London stalwart that has lasted the test of time with a loyal customer base of locals and out of towners who make a pilgrimage to this well-known trattoria whenever nearby. Sale e Pepe started life as two shop fronts on one of London’s most exclusive streets, just minutes away from Harrods and Harvey Nichols. In 1985, it was transformed into a classy Italian; the kind of place that prides itself on high standards in an informal setting, where customers are treated as friends and the food is always reliably delicious. This solid footing has ensured the restaurant’s survival and is today just as popular as it was nearly 50 years ago when it opened, with clients that include British royalty, Hollywood stars and, of course, regulars from the area.
The space feels authentic and laid back with lots of natural light and neutral walls which balance out the rustic bare brick features and patterned tiled floor. Occasionally art works and decorative plates adorn the walls, but in a non-stylised way. In essence, the space is homely and unfussy, with a focus on the menu and Italian hospitality. The restaurant can be booked out for private events, with the website citing that birthdays and celebrations are more than welcome and could take over a couple of tables or the entire space. In this instance, a set menu is provided of which there are three options. Each menu offers three courses and an additional course or side of seasonal vegetables. As the price point gets higher, the course options become more extravagant, but with a hearty Italian theme always at the forefront. Some examples of the dishes include braised veal ravioli with tomato and basil to start, wild king prawns sautéed in oil, garlic, parsley and chilli for mains and homemade tiramisu for an indulgent dessert.

“Unchanged forever”, this old-school trattoria a few steps from Harrods shows remarkable staying power as it closes in on its half-century. With its impeccably “noisy Italian atmosphere”, regulars are happy to rate it “my favourite restaurant in London” – “it always makes for a wonderful evening, with delicious food and perfect, attentive service”.
