Inspired by a honeymooning couple’s vinous adventures in California’s Napa Valley, this well-situated wine bar and deli is lined with bottles to attract oenophiles and casual visitors – though the views over Liverpool’s Albert Dock certainly help too. Wine tasters are solemnly lined up in 50ml glasses; in the dry white wine sampler, a feisty Spanish Verdejo outclasses a Sauvignon Blanc and South African Chenin Blanc. Food is a later addition – tapas include tangy patatas bravas and succulent plump prawns pil pil. The fillet steak strips are meltingly tender, balanced by a soothing bean casserole. On the lovingly presented cheeseboard (with accompanying garnish), a Harlech Cheddar with horseradish and parsley stands head and shoulders above a Colston Bassett Stilton and crumby Lancashire. The venue tends to empty early, with serious wine lovers wending their weary way home while visitors head for the bright lights of the city just across the dock.
